چکیده
In this paper, we review some recent work on amorphous materials using current “first principles” electronic structure/molecular dynamics techniques. The main theme of the paper is to emphasize new directions in the use of such ab initio methods. Some of these, being quite new, need development, but we believe have promise for solving new and important kinds of problems in the physics of glassy and amorphous materials. Initially, we discuss first principles calculations in broad outline and comment on the various approximations in common use. Then, we describe methods for forming a computer model of amorphous materials. This is an area of intense activity and methods beyond the obvious “quench from the melt” method are showing promise and utility. In this paper, we discuss a new method: “Decorate and Relax”, and a new implementation of the Reverse Monte Carlo method. Finally, we discuss the computation of electronic properties, especially carrier transport and time evolution of electron states.

Extending X-ray crystallography to allow the imaging of noncrystalline materials, cells, and single protein complexes.
In 1999, researchers extended X-ray crystallography to allow the imaging of noncrystalline specimens by measuring the X-ray diffraction pattern of a noncrystalline specimen and then directly phasing it using the oversampling method with iterative algorithms. Since then, the field has evolved moving in three important directions. The first is the 3D structural determination of noncrystalline mat...
متن کاملPhotonic Structure-Integrated Two-Dimensional Material Optoelectronics
The rapid development and unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, phosphorene and transition metal dichalcogenides enable them to become intriguing candidates for future optoelectronic applications. To maximize the potential of 2D material-based optoelectronics, various photonic structures are integrated to form photonic structure/2D material hybrid systems so tha...
متن کاملNanoglasses: a new kind of noncrystalline materials
Nanoglasses are a new class of noncrystalline solids. They differ from today's glasses due to their microstructure that resembles the microstructure of polycrystals. They consist of regions with a melt-quenched glassy structure connected by interfacial regions, the structure of which is characterized (in comparison to the corresponding melt-quenched glass) by (1) a reduced (up to about 10%) den...
متن کاملA New Optical Implementation of Reversible Fulladder Using Optoelectronics Devices
This study introduces a reversible optical fulladder. Also optical NOT and NOR gates are implemented through Electro-Absorption-Modulator / Photo Detector (EAM/PD) pairs, were utilized for fulfilling reversible R gate. Then, reversible fulladder was designed based on the proposed reversible optical R gate. The operation of the suggested fulladder was simulated using Optispice and it was fou...
متن کاملJu l 1 99 8 A molecular - dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids
A molecular-dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids Abstract Molecular-dynamics simulations of fracture in model amorphous solids are shown to exhibit brittle or ductile behavior depending on small changes in interatomic potential. Yet, simulations of these two model solids under pure shear reveal no significant difference in their ultimate yield stress. To...
